Night Owl Technologies is a small company by design, and we look for people who are comfortable operating in that environment. Our ideal Night Owl is an experienced, self-starting professional who does not need a large organization, rigid process, or constant direction to make progress. We value people who can be handed a difficult problem, determine what they need to learn, find the right people and technologies, and start working toward a solution. That means being comfortable making decisions, communicating directly with customers and peers, and taking ownership of both successes and failures. We want people who recognize that being a Subject Matter Expert does not mean having every answer—it means knowing how to find the answer and being willing to do the work required to get there.
We are particularly interested in people who are curious, hands-on, and unafraid to experiment. Sometimes the fastest way to understand a technology is to build something with it, take it apart, break it, figure out why it broke, and fix it. Night Owls are comfortable moving between research and practical application: reading the documentation, writing the code, opening the equipment, talking directly with an engineer or vendor, testing a hypothesis, and getting their hands dirty when necessary. We value sound engineering judgment, but we do not confuse avoiding failure with avoiding risk. Responsible experimentation, rapid iteration, and learning from what does not work are fundamental to solving difficult technical problems.
Working at a small company also means being willing to contribute beyond a narrowly defined job description. Our people may engage directly with customers, evaluate new technologies, attend conferences, work with industry partners, develop a prototype, help shape a technical approach, or simply jump in when another Night Owl needs assistance. We look for professionals who enjoy that freedom and understand the responsibility that comes with it. Ego and titles matter considerably less to us than competence, initiative, integrity, and the ability to work effectively with others.
Most importantly, we look for people who remain curious about their profession. Technology changes too quickly for expertise to remain static. We want Night Owls who continue learning because they genuinely want to know what comes next—whether through advanced education, certifications, conferences, independent research, experimentation, or a project that has nothing to do with their day job. If you enjoy difficult problems, prefer doing over watching, are willing to occasionally break something so you can understand how to make it better, and like the idea of helping shape a small company rather than simply working inside a large one, you may be the kind of person we're looking for.
